Always Think About Saving Energy

The important thing is always think about energy use. You will save a great deal of energy, lower your utility bills, and reduce the resources needed to create that energy.  Even if you create electricity with your own wind and solar systems, if you use less doing day to day tasks, you will have more for other things.

For instance, dishwashers use a great deal of energy during the drying cycle.  Avoid the dry cycle and you save energy — and money.  The easiest way is to take advantage of the “Air-Dry” feature on newer dishwashers.  This will automatically end the cycle after the last rinse and pop open the door to let the dishes dry naturally.  If you have an older dishwasher without the air-dry feature, just open the door after the last rinse to stop the cycle and let the dishes dry.  This works best when you only have one load to do (which you should do in the late evening), but careful planning may let you do one load during the day, air dry it, then another load in the evening, and then air dry that load also.

Great New Book for DIY Solar Hot Water

Speaking of hot water.  Did you know that heating domestic hot water for your home can take up as much as 33% of the total cost?  So what to do about that?

How about supplementing your electric or gas hot water heater with water heated by the sun – the free energy source.

Here is a great book from the same folks that brought you the Solar Wind and Electricity program I have mentioned before, but this time they are taking on a DIY project for hot water for you to bath in and wash the dishes with.  You can see this new book here.  One of the things I like about these folks is how they help you find reasonable sources for the materials you need.  Not only do you save money on your utility bills, but you also save money when you build the project.

This OUTSTANDING Project Deserves Our Support

Welcome to the new Look at Wind and Solar Blog.  The first post is not directly related to energy saving, but still is VERY worthy of note and action.

I Read a great story over the weekend: http://www.parade.com/health/2009/03/solar-cooker-project.html.  This is such a great project on so many levels:

  • It provides critically needed help in a desparate part of the world.
  • It is strikingly simple and inexpensive
  • It saves lives, both directly and indirectly
  • It is a solution that is very earth friendly.

So by all means, after you have read this great story, go to http://www.jewishworldwatch.org/refugeerelief/solarcookerproject.html, read a bit more and definitely contribute – I have.

It will be interesting to see if this concept is adapted to de-salinization.  What a great way to get clean fresh water!
